The coolest baby in town | Oahu family photographer

I liked Holly before I even met her. In her Facebook profile picture she has her son’s tiny baby feet squishing her face and I thought, this woman has a fabulous sense of humor. And she does. Turns out she is a photographer and Photoshop guru as well, the talented owner of Spitting Images.

She was about to move to San Diego (boo) and wanted pictures of her little man enjoying some fine Hawaii beaches. We waited a bit until Thayer was sitting up – well, most of the time anyway – and set a date for a photo session at a stunning beach on the North Shore that Holly had a special attachment to.

I’m not going to lie. I’ve never taken photos for another photographer before and I was a bit freaked out. But baby Thayer, wonderfully awesome, coolest baby that he is, quickly made me forget all that. He has the biggest eyes, the coolest mohawk, and some of the greatest expressions I have ever seen. Plus, his commando crawl is not to be missed. We splashed in the water, ate a bit of sand – a good time was had by all.

Pumpkin patch, Hawaii Style | Oahu family activities

Our first visit to a pumpkin patch in Hawaii was at Aloun Farms. It was okay, but it’s in Kapolei, the hottest place on earth. We cooked a little bit. Last year however, right about the time the owners of Aloun Farms were being charged with human trafficking (the case was dropped, you can buy  your pumpkins with a clear conscience, phew), Waimanalo Country Farms started a pumpkin patch. I tagged along with Micah on his school field trip to check it out.

When we arrived, there was an apparent lack of pumpkins. Six school groups, hundreds of kids and no pumpkins. I thought that was a little odd, it being a pumpkin patch and all. As we were being whisked away on the hay ride, a tractor came and dumped some pumpkins in a few cleared corn fields. Okay, that’s one way to do it. But there were great mountain and ocean views and a cool breeze, so I dragged the family back again this year.

If you’re used to pumpkin patches on the mainland, you’ll note a few Hawaii-fications. For example hot apple cider is replaced with shave ice and pumpkin chunkin’ is replaced with a canon that shoots golf balls at pumpkins. Is that an improvement? I can’t decide.

The farm is a bit disorganized and a little pricey. For example, $3 will get you into the petting zoo, sort of. It gets you to a fence where you can then pay more to feed the animals. It will cost you another $3 if you want to actually enter the area with the animals. But I forgive them because they had delicious lemonade in a Mason jar. And at least the corn was grown there.

If you have an open mind and $20-$40 to spend, go check it out. The kids will love it.

Four baby friends turn one | a special birthday celebration

Katey planned a big first birthday luau at Kalama Beach Club in Kailua for her so-adorable-I-have-to-squish-your-cheeks baby girl (those are some seriously cute cheeks). The party wasn’t just for one baby, but four baby friends that were all born within a month of each other. Friends since birth, all turning one. How cool is that?

Katey is a photographer, so she knew with hosting the party and watching the little ones, it would be too chaotic to take photos herself. She just wanted to relax a bit, enjoy the day and let someone else capture the memories. And birthday parties are just so much fun to photograph! They had all recently learned to walk and some (i’m not naming any names) really loved to eat:)I got to observe and capture all the crazy cuteness.

Okay, enough talk. Bring on the babies!

There’s something special about first birthdays! If you’re like me, hosting the party, talking to guests and managing the kids will take up all your time and you won’t get a chance to take any photos! Let me capture those memories for you, so you can enjoy the day! Just send me a note and we can start planning your session!

Family fun at Baby Makapuu | Oahu family photographer

Owen and Liam are two years apart, almost to the day. Maybe they won’t like sharing a birthday when they’re older, but right now there’s something really fun about it. They’re a couple of beach lovers, so Angela wanted to celebrate their first and third birthdays with a photography session at the beach.

She also wanted to be in the photos herself for a change. When the kids were born, she bought a nice camera to capture their overwhelming cuteness. She has lots of great pictures of the kids, only she’s not in any of them. I can definitely relate. My son always asks me “where were you when this picture was taken?” Sigh.

We planned a day out at Baby Makapuu where the kids could explore and they could play together as a family. Rocks were climbed, puddles were splashed, and great discoveries were made. It was a good morning.

This is how we roll | Oahu family activites

I think we may have more skate parks on the island than swing sets. Normally they’re occupied by brooding teenagers but if you get there early enough, you can have this adventureland all to yourselves. Okay, it may not be your traditional play area for the under 5 crowd, but it’s pretty great if you think like a kid. It has mountains to climb, plenty of interesting slides, lots of space for anything that rolls and best of all, it’s enclosed.

We went to Keolu Skate Park in Enchanted Lakes, Kailua for our adventure, but i’m sure there is a park close to you. Go grab a funky hat and get your skate on!

P.S. This is a great activity for dads. Send them off for some Saturday morning bonding and take the morning off.
