When I met baby Ella at our consultation, I knew we were going to have a great photo session. Only 8 months old but this little girl is packed full of personality and joy (and beautiful blue eyes)! We headed to Bellow’s Beach on a most beautiful Friday afternoon for some photos, sand eating, and wave watching (from a distance – Ella didn’t want to get too close to that water stuff). Look at that sweet face. I could photograph her all day!

First birthday = first sugar

I’m not sure there is much cuter than babies on their first birthday! I had the honor to meet and photograph Keahue as a newborn and now a year later (how has it been a year already?!), I got to join her for her first sugar at Hoomaluhia.

Jiny has only fed her organic, homemade tasty foods so we were excited to see her reaction to a massive cake. She thought the sea stars next to the cake were fascinating. The candles were even better. The cake itself did not register as food. What? am I supposed to eat this?! Jiny gave her a taste and she just wasn’t impressed. After a bit of a warm-up she discovered that cake was fun to squish between her fingers and she got nice and dirty. If you’re not going to eat it, you have to squish it!

I liked Holly before I even met her. In her Facebook profile picture she has her son’s tiny baby feet squishing her face and I thought, this woman has a fabulous sense of humor. And she does. Turns out she is a photographer and Photoshop guru as well, the talented owner of Spitting Images.

She was about to move to San Diego (boo) and wanted pictures of her little man enjoying some fine Hawaii beaches. We waited a bit until Thayer was sitting up – well, most of the time anyway – and set a date for a photo session at a stunning beach on the North Shore that Holly had a special attachment to.

I’m not going to lie. I’ve never taken photos for another photographer before and I was a bit freaked out. But baby Thayer, wonderfully awesome, coolest baby that he is, quickly made me forget all that. He has the biggest eyes, the coolest mohawk, and some of the greatest expressions I have ever seen. Plus, his commando crawl is not to be missed. We splashed in the water, ate a bit of sand – a good time was had by all.

Four baby friends turn one | a special birthday celebration

Katey planned a big first birthday luau at Kalama Beach Club in Kailua for her so-adorable-I-have-to-squish-your-cheeks baby girl (those are some seriously cute cheeks). The party wasn’t just for one baby, but four baby friends that were all born within a month of each other. Friends since birth, all turning one. How cool is that?

Katey is a photographer, so she knew with hosting the party and watching the little ones, it would be too chaotic to take photos herself. She just wanted to relax a bit, enjoy the day and let someone else capture the memories. And birthday parties are just so much fun to photograph! They had all recently learned to walk and some (i’m not naming any names) really loved to eat I got to observe and capture all the crazy cuteness.

Okay, enough talk. Bring on the babies!

There’s something special about first birthdays! If you’re like me, hosting the party, talking to guests and managing the kids will take up all your time and you won’t get a chance to take any photos! I met Heather awhile back when she took my photography class. Well “met” in the online sense, since it was an online class. By the way, in the future i’m making it an in-person, live kind of deal. There were too many people, shall we say, slacking on their homework . Anyway, one of the reasons Heather took the class was to take better photographs for her blog, Mama Surfs. I checked it out one day and read her post called time is love. It really struck a cord with me for 2 reasons.

First of all, it was a great reminder to find time to actually live my life, not just survive it. I started this business with the intention of it being part-time allowing me time to take care of the kids and house, spend time with my husband, friends, maybe get some exercise, possibly even have a few minutes of free-time? Yeah, not so much. The business has consumed every aspect of my life. I find myself saying things to my kids like “not right now, I have to work” more and more often. It sucks. So, Heather inspired me to re-arrange my life in order to make time for things that matter most.

Secondly, she outlined my dream family photography session. I read their morning family surfing ritual and just had to photograph it. I want to do more than take pictures of families smiling on the beach. I want to dig deeper and find something fun and meaningful to them and then tag along to take photos capturing those fun memories forever.

So Heather, thank you for the inspiration and the kick in the but to get back to living and for sharing your morning with me. You have an incredible family!

Baby Emma won my cutest baby photography contest awhile back. Her parents decided to hold off on their session until she started walking and i’m so glad they did! The pure joy of a baby when they first start walking or crawling is incredible. Freedom! She would be standing or sitting and a huge smile would transform her face, as if she was remembering she could walk, and she would take off. To top it off, it happened to be her first birthday. I did not want to stop taking pictures of this cutie. It was awesome.

A Break in the Rain | Hawaii Kids Photography

After a full day (week?) of rain, we finally had a break in the weather. We headed out to Sandy Beach just before sunset to squeeze in a fun photography session. This sibling duo is beautiful, sweet and downright silly. What a perfect combination! I had so much fun taking their photographs. We searched for shells, made volcanoes, played hide and seek, and made some soulful music. Not a bad way to spend an evening.

I met Bella and her mom at the Hawaii Baby Expo and I immediately want to take photographs of her. I mean, look at that hair! Turns out this adorable toddler has an adorable personality to match. During our photo session she roared like a lion, shook her booty, ate some bubbles and chased down some fairly large dogs. She also kissed me on the nose. How can you not fall in love with her? Hope to meet again soon sweet girl!

Bella is the happiest baby I know. Every time I see her, she smiles so big she looks like she may explode from happiness. In fact, if I didn’t live downstairs from her i’d swear she never cries, only exists in a constant state of baby bliss. She’s pretty awesome.

Bella’s equally awesome mom and my friend has to return to work soon. We thought a photography session was in order, so she could remember these days of just mom and daughter trying to figure each other out – frustrating, exhausting and incredibly rewarding days. We started with a mini photo session at the park with plans for a lifestyle session next week.

This awesome family is moving. In fact, it’s their last day on Oahu. They wanted to take a bit of Hawaii with them, but since it’s hard to transport sandy feet and tropical breezes, they opted for a photography session. We met at Ko’olina for a fun morning that included fishing, hermit crabs and sea turtles. Not a bad way to say goodbye! Wishing you safe travels and a wonderful time in NC!

Mamanu Kids Vintage Clothing | Oahu Family Photographer

I met Anna a few weeks back at a Baby Awareness event. She was selling insanely cute bonnets and clothes that made me want to run out and take pictures of my kids wearing them. They are really that cute. It turns out she just started her business and I just started my business. She’s a red bird (Mamanu means red bird) and i’m a little bird (I guess that makes me manu iki). We decided to work together. How could we not?

So one evening we rounded up a bunch of kids, a pile of Mamanu clothes and hats, some tasty Mexican food, a bag of Oreo’s and headed to the beach for a photo shoot. It was chaos, but in a good way. Micah had a great time. He actually said, can we have a photo shoot with them again tomorrow? He does love the ladies.

Watch out Oahu, this little man is going to steal your hearts. What a joy! What a cutie! What a super happy, smiley guy! Can you tell i’m a fan?

Well, this fun family wanted to capture their fabulous Kailua life, so we started at home with Grandma and Nana and biked to the beach in style. I love, love, love those bike seats that sit in front. That’s where all the excitement is. We were lucky to finally get a break in the rain and enjoy a beautiful beach sunset.

On a side note, Bethany is a rock star artist – know those mosaics on the soon to open Kailua Whole Foods? Yup, she did that. I always admire those and the living wall when I drive into Kailua.
